    Hi Rosie,

I really like your blog. My family comes from near to Oxford.

Does your grandma like sweets now ? Perhaps she never developed a sweet tooth because she never had them as a child.

Many merchant sailors were killed during the war trying to bring food to Great Britain. The Germans had submarines called “U Boats” that hunted in packs and blew up merchant vessels that were trying to bring food in, mainly from the USA. In England a campaign was launched called “Dig for Victory” where people were encouraged to grow their own vegetables in their gardens, allotments, and small plots of land so that we were less dependent on food imports.

Lots of people got very rich after the war building on bomb sites. Perhaps the two most famous are Ron Hobson and Donald Gosling who started buying bomb sites for people to park cars on them. This business eventually became NCP Car Parks which they sold for £500,000,000 !
